A painfully frank portrait of 22-year-old Jason as he undergoes trauma therapy. This is the third and final part of Maasja Ooms’ trilogy about the failing Dutch youth welfare services. As in the two previous documentaries Alicia and Rotjochies (Punks), the film is a critical observation from a very personal point of view.Ooms closely follows Jason as he struggles with the psychological effects of a traumatic childhood, which were only intensified when he was taken into juvenile residental care at the age of 16. During intense therapy sessions, it becomes clear how much he has been harmed, and how far-reaching the consequences are when wrong decisions are made in the youth care system. In Ooms’ caring and respectful portrayal, we see Jason not only as a victim, but also as a campaigner who uses his experiences to save others from suffering in the same way. This mission gives him the determination to get better and the strength to show his most vulnerable side, no matter how difficult that might be.IDFA Award for Best Dutch Film Show less

    • Creative Producer - In Procedure
      • Jan 2016 - 2020

I currently work on a campagne to bring documentary In Procedure by Jiska Rickels to it’s audience. I combine the cinema screenings with a match-events to connect refugees with their new neighbors. These match-events work together with the local language/buddy initiatives, with Vluchtelingenwerk and with the Refugee Talent Hub. Alliances are built with NGO’s, Dutch business, government, educational institutions to promote market-sustainable integration of refugees talent on the Dutch labor market. They have opened job vacancies for status holders, from low to highly educated. The Hub matches buddies with refugees and, together with LinkedIn and UAF, the Hub provides a free three-month training to mentors and talents who want to help to prepare them for a job interview. The match-events are hosted by Soroptimists, the Dutch branch of the leading international service organization of professional women in the world, committed to the promotion of human rights and improving the position of women and girls in particular. The arrival of many women and children who are reunited with their families and have to find a place in our society fits their target group. The Soroptimists have long supported UNICEFs Syria back to school, where funds were raised for education of displaced Syrian children in Turkey. But because refugees are now living among us, the urge to connect to them locally has grown. Therefore, the Soroptimists broaden the initiative Syria back to school to Back to Society. They want to be a mentor and will use their nationwide network of 102 clubs to help the refugee or status holders with the next step into society.Interested in hosting a screening with match event too? Interested in attending a screening? please contact me.After a first try out at Filmschuur Haarlem the 10th of December, the first big screening and match-event is Thursday December 22nd at Pakhuis de Zwijger. • Creative Producer - Punks
      • Jan 2018 - Nov 2019

Punks shows three Dutch teenagers whose behaviour is criminal. They are trying to better their lives with the help of a no-nonsense caretaker, somewhere deep in rural France. If they fail, they will be handed over to a closed juvenile home. In Rotjochies the filmmaker is in search of the root cause of the survival strategies that derailed and unmanageable young people have developed. What makes these kids so angry, indifferent, numb and even unscrupulous? What happened to them? Why do they behave the way they do? Show less

    • Creative Producer - If You Are Not There, Where Are You?
      • Jan 2016 - Sep 2019

I currently work on a trans media project If you are not there, where are you? about the often misunderstood and frightening experience children and teenagers have during an absence seizure. October 25th. 2017: Children-College ‘Looking with your brain’ with the soft launch of the work in progress of a VR-game by Monobanda Play and website areyouthere.nl by Inspector V.November 3rd. 2017 a presentation of the VR-game and website areyouthere.nl in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam 20:30 hrs.November 11th. IN Science festival Nijmegen. Most people know the tonic-clonic seizure, where you fall and shake. The seizures most common with children and adolescents are called absences, formerly known as ‘falling disease’. These absences have a severe influence on these young lives. Patients are absent for short moments, sometimes a hundred times a day, thus missing bits of information thoughout the day. Nevejan had absences as a child too, and she knows how anxious, disorienting and shameful absences can feel. All dimensions are changing, from very large to very small, time disappears, dimensions turn inside out, the feeling of ‘ME’ exists no longer, there are vague feelings of being watched. It is a combination of disgust and attraction. This project in is mapping the absence experiences of children and youngsters, through art and media. Artists work individually with a child to visualize or compose their inner experience. In the end, the project speaks to us all: about altered states of consciousness, perception and how our minds work. A sort of Doors of Perception, for children. How do we see what we see? What does it mean, what does it say about us? How can we handle the fear? What is reality? I am currently looking for (international) partners to co-fund the production of this transmedia project which consists of a VR- game, a website with virtual reality and a 90’ documentary. • Creative Producer - The Man Who Looked Beyond the Horizon
      • Jun 2016 - Nov 2018

‘The man who looked beyond the horizon’ is a youth documentary about a yearning for the impossible. It is an exciting adventure story about seeking and surpassing boundaries. About challenging and defying boundaries between what is possible and that which seems inconceivable. In contrast to the customary Dutch youth documentary the main character in this film is not a child but an adult. Even more unusual is the fact that it is not even a living adult but rather the deceased (and missing) young artist Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975). The Impact Strategy is produced by Vera Born and art consultant Barbara Jonckheer, in collaboration with The Impact Academy. The script is developed during a kids&docs workshop by IDFA, CINEKID and NPO-fonds. Show less

Awards: Special Jury Award Dutch Documentary IDFA 2017, Hartenhuis Award for the impact of ALICIA & the campaign Stop de Carrousel, Prix Italia 2018, Best Feature Film at DOKer Int. Film Fest. Moscow, Best Film at Gdansk Film Fest. Poland, Special Jury Award at Cinema Verité at Iran Int. Film fest.Nominated: for the Dutch Directors Guild Award 2018, the BANFF Rocky Award, the Golden Calf Best Dutch Documentary NFF 2018 and the Prix Europa 2018Alicia is one year old when she is removed from her home. Via a foster family she is placed into a children’s care home when she is five. By the time she is nine, she is still there, awaiting placement with a new family. This is when the documentary ALICIA starts. For three years the film follows the girl in her daily life in close-cropped, observing images. These make the desires and powerlessness of the young, homeless Alicia, as well as the impact of a lack of perspective, palpable. Will the girl derail because of the hopelessness of her situation or are we witness to an inescapable history that repeats itself?Maasja Ooms directed, filmed and edited ALICA to make a poignant film about a universal theme: our need for love. Cerutti Film aims to build alliances with diverse partners that support and complement te point of view of the filmmaker. This multi-faceted approach will magnify the impact a documentary has on society. On November 19th after the screening at IDFA, a dialogue between policymakers, Youth Care Professionals & foster parents was hosted by Andersson Elffers Felix and ambassador YouthCare Jan Menting. It became the start of an impact campaign that consisted of many more screenings and dialogues to find out of the box-solutions for the 3000 Alicia’s in the Netherlands. The programme and the social change is monitored at www.aliciadocumentaire.nl/agenda. In collaboration with Stichting Het Vergeten Kind. Show less
