One trimester a year I teach a beginner's play-writing course at the Schrijversvakschool in Amsterdam. The course is part of a first year program designed to give aspiring writers a well-rounded foundation in all the literary genres they might decide to specialize in the years to come. While most will naturally choose other areas to explore, play-writing teaches students important skills that will help them develop their skills. Because drama is particularly unforgiving. Learning to write a decent dramatic scene teaches students to develop a kind of x-ray vision; seeing the bones of the story hidden behind the characters' prattle. It teaches them to be both economical with the audience's attention span, while thinking big when developing two hours' worth of storytelling. Show less
