  Research role where duties are split between the economic development and research team, and the policy team. Primarily collecting and analysing statistics regarding the local area, in order to update the Harrow vitality profiles. Statistics are used to create thematic maps using ArcMap. Further analysis involves comparing local statistics to national or London averages, and finding potential justifications for changes over time. (i.e querying GIS layers detailing recent developments in order to justify increases in local population density).Recently been part of the team involved in Harrow Councils submission regarding ward boundary changes: requiring the calculation of population increases pertaining to local building development and using GIS/data/local knowledge to strike the balances between suitable boundaries (whether physical or invisible) and community structures.Also provide assistance to the policy team when required. Involves data management in excel and devising ways to identify relevant data within a dataset. Also required to replicate (and where necessary create) methodologies via the use of GIS or statistical analysis. Contextually most work pertains to part-analysis of Harrows housing market and comparison of trends to other London markets.Exposure to both research and policy has given me an understanding into the planning process and benefits my own understanding of how data applies to the local area. This allows me to emphasise a holistic approach to data (due to the nature of planning be a multi-variable process).

  Role pertained to assisting in a national project commissioned by the Rural Payments Agency; helping in the distribution of agricultural subsidies. Using a custom GIS system, current multi-spectral satellite imagery, and aerial photographs to identify and digitise land parcels. Establishing ownership boundaries with subsequent land cover/use. The role requires following a variety of protocol as mapped changes are regularly updated within the system. CAPI (greening & non-greening) - Identifying features and land use eligible for subsidies. PLCD - Pro-actively correcting boundaries to latest imagery and intelligence. All roles required the use of splitting/merging parcels, and OS Master Maps.

  Attended a short 5-week placement, researching the armed conflict in Colombia. Compiled literature reviews addressing various post-conflict land reform policy and discussed post-conflict environmental impacts with members of the university. Proof read an academic paper which is now published where I was given an acknowledgement. Whilst abroad I learnt basic Spanish and carried out interviews with local members of the community to gain a greater understanding of political issues.   I was fortunate enough to undertake a versatile 5 week placement at Volvo Car U.K, which gave me experience in a variety of departments: Sales Operations: Collect and present information, using Microsoft Excel, regarding current competitor offers, allowing the tactical programme manager to make informed and effective decisions regarding quarterly offers. Business Sales Team: Gained experience liaising with clients and helping answer any queries. Gained an understanding into negotiation processes: specifically how products can be tailored to customer requirements. Notable experience included liaising with the Environment Agency. Market Intelligence: Gained an understanding into the process of creating market forecasts, and how this is used to monitor market share and KPIs. Networking: Was given an overview of company initiatives and operations, showing how policies from head office work their way to dealerships and ultimately clients. Attended dealer action groups where feedback from dealerships would be relayed to head office. Combined with monitoring metrics allowing future policies to be informed. Whilst working in these roles I was encouraged to actively critique environmental impacts throughout.
