Working my way up to becoming a Business Consultant and finally being a Principal Business Consultant, more and more clients began to ask "So what is next?". That was when BPM became really interesting as it opened the door to a whole universe of different perspectives of operational strategy from continuous improvement to governance risk and control to automations and machine learning - not just those within one industry but across varied sectors. The first biggest challenge came at a Malaysian bank looking to utilize the business processes that had been defined to automate 80% of SDLC activities from business requirement definition to functional specification preparations to even running testing in an automated sense, all fundamentals of which were grounded in processes. In fact we were so successful that we began coining the term ATLC (Automated Testing Lifecycle) where test scripts could be automatically generated from the business processes to be automatically executed on the testing platforms and any failures could be automatically traced back to the business requirements that underlie them. Once we managed to achieve that, it was only logically natural to extrapolate our skills learnt from SDLC and employ it towards all other aspects of processes, which resulted in our continuing efforts to turning any processes defined to live processes that users would be able to practice which brought about a whole new paradigm to automation, a paradigm which I would recognize now as Process Orchestration in its truest sense. There will be new challenges that would arise, the biggest of which I would suppose would be Artificial Intelligence (AI). But given the fact that decisions are usually defined in processes in order to define the potential scenarios that could occur, I am confident BPM can to rise to this challenge and more. Show less
