Willem-Jan is a very skilled, intelligent and motivated medicinal chemists. He is the best organic chemist I ever worked with having extensive theoretical as well as practical knowledge of modern organic chemistry. Most of all I enjoyed Willem-Jan’s unique creativity, which was a decisive factor in many of his drug discovery projects. Apart from these skills Willem-Jan is a very good teamplayer and people manager. He communicates very easily, he is open minded and he is not afraid to challenge people when necessary. It was a great pleasure working with Willem-Jan and I can strongly recommend him to any organisation.

In the past decade, I collaborated in several roles with Willem-Jan on various Drug Discovery and Development projects, initially as Section Head in Medicinal Chemistry, later as Site Lead Women's Health & Endocrinology. Willem-Jan is a very intelligent, highly committed and skilled medicinal chemist with a broad scientific scope and a pragmatic approach to challenges and problems. Beyond any doubt, Willem-Jan is the most talented organic chemist I ever had the pleasure to collaborate with. Even the most complex organic molecules always proved accessible due to his excellent knowledge of modern organic transformations and synthetic procedures. In his role as chemistry group leader, he demonstrated his ability to inspire people and to work efficiently across disciplines. He is an excellent people manager with an open and natural leadership style. His ability to coach and develop people was highly appreciated by his subordinates. His behavioural competencies are well developed, he communicates effectively, has an excellent command of language and is able to challenge colleagues from various disciplines in scientific discussions. Willem-Jan is clearly result-oriented, which is exemplified by the impressive number of successful R&D programs he was involved in and the inventorship of numerous patents and patent applications.
