As Wende's supervisor at NRL for several years, I can easily say that Wende is a leading researcher in natural language processing and understanding, as well as a person who specializes in related topics, such as machine learning and cognitive science. She has a broad background and knowledge. She has a solid educational foundation upon which she can rely to perform her research. She is unafraid to explore new areas and apply novel approaches to tackle hard AI problems. She is a self-starter, can work both independently, and is a proven productive team member. She proved herself to be an asset as a researcher and scientist in the Interactive Systems Group at the Naval Research Laboratory but also as a cooperative, friendly, and personable associate.

I developed with Wende on the same engineering team at Artificial Solutions from late 2016 to early 2018. Wende is an expert in natural language processing and is always intrigued by new applications of machine learning. Her academic and industry experience make her the ideal person for understanding the intricacies of machine learning models in a wide variety of natural language processing applications. I learned a great deal from my time working with Wende and I wish that she and I were still on the same team!

As a senior knowledge engineer on the engineering team at Artificial Solutions, I design, build, and test customized virtual assistants in domains such as IoT, telecom, healthcare, finance, and customer service. I build the virtual assistants using a combination of core NLP tools for part-of-speech tagging, syntactic parsing and word sense disambiguation, in addition to integrating machine learning models trained on balanced datasets gathered from internal data sources as well as data provided by the clients. These assistants all feature interactive dialogues with a virtual agent who parses complex requests, understands contextual questions, and offers predictive responses. I designed, led, and implemented the initial machine learning architecture into our virtual assistant solutions, interleaving rules-based and machine-learned layers into the final language understanding mechanism. Working as a Computational Research Linguist at NRL, I collaborated with other researchers in artificial intelligence, cognitive architectures, and research psychology to create applications and software that furthered the missions of the Navy warfighter by incorporating human usability factors and cutting edge technology. I led a team throughout the lifecycle of two government funded software applications within the Interactive Systems Section of the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence. NCARAI projects I was instrumental on included such topics as automated accent and dialect recognition software, time sensitive decision-making with multi-modal input, and the integration of language capabilities onto firefighting robots. Working at CIRCAS, I designed and implemented new additions to the ICARUS cognitive architecture, chiefly natural language processing abilities using conceptual inference for parsing, modeling understanding, and learning skills for generation. This was achieved by retaining short-term beliefs and creating new linguistic concepts during run time. I was also instrumental in integrating the ICARUS architecture with the DIARC cognitive architecture, resulting in successful cross architecture experiments, planning, and implementation of autonomous goals on robots.
