Bio
Tom Dietterich
It was a pleasure supervising Wei Zhang during his PhD dissertation at Oregon State. Wei demonstrated tremendous initiative and energy from day one. He is a natural researcher and entrepreneur who can identify important new problems, develop technical solutions, and build compelling demonstrations of their effectiveness. As a graduate student in my group, he was frequently sought after by my colleagues to help on other projects because of his outstanding engineering and problem-solving skills. He published a long string of scientific papers during his PhD and also completed an extremely productive internship at PARC, where his work led to multiple patents and publications.

I got to work with Wei when he was in the Google Analytics team that I managed. Wei lead and helped drive a bunch of efforts related to machine learning. I was very impressed by both his technical strengths as well as his leadership skills. Not only would he come up with innovative solutions to challenging problems but he would also ensure that he implemented solutions efficiently and scaled them. He also worked very well with product management and other roles to ensure that those solutions got adopted and owned the problems he worked on end-to-end. So in summary - a great engineer who consistently delivered.
