I worked for Warren Wilson for about 5 years. As president and CEO of a thriving niche horse magazine, he is one of the most innovative people I know. Warren is an amazing collaborator. I have so many fond memories of working with him side by side as if we were doing improvisation in a jazz band. As my supervisor, it was never about him pushing ideas on me but about inspiring me to contribute my own ideas... at the same time, he had a keen sense of the big picture and how to make things fit. He understood his business very well, and I knew the technology. It was so much fun taking Warren's direction and finding a way to get the job done. I always felt he respected my abilities. He made me feel like an inside confidant even though I was the only person in the company that knew nothing about horses. Warren has a way of making each employee feel like a special contributor to the business, and he has a knack for finding new skill sets within his organization. One year there were horrible fires in the area of the headquarters of the California Horsetrader. There were many heroes who put their own lives at risk to help save horses in the communities affected. We received many calls from horse owners asking if we could publish their appreciation notes to these heroes. Warren set me to work creating a website to allow those thank you letters to be uploaded for publication free of charge. He asked me to do that at a time when we had half the staff out tending to their own homes and horses due to fires. I always appreciated that Warren wanted to give something back to the community. Another time, he knew of a publisher of another horse magazine that was loosing a long time business partner. Warren knew that the business would collapse if he did not step in and help out. He immediately put our staff to work on doing what we could to help the other publication. Within about a week we had figured out to use our software and automation to accomodate the other magazine. The other business never missed a publication date thanks to Warren's generosity. Working for Warren was certainly a highlight of my career, and I would recommend him to anyone as an employer or trusted business partner.
