I had the pleasure of working together with Jim Warner for seven years, the last two years as Jim’s line manager. Jim was first the Corporate General Counsel of Anchor Glass, a company that Ardagh acquired. In this function Jim had responsibility also for the corporate EHS organization and the due diligence process. After the acquisition and integration of Verallia, Jim headed up the North American (NA) Risk organization first for Glass and later for all NA operations including Glass, Beverage Cans and Food & Specialties Cans. Jim led an integrated approach in Risk Management across Ardagh NA’s Business Units. He successfully implemented Risk Management processes and practices and strongly engaged with all levels of the organization to seek alignment and calibration of Risk Management elements in particular regarding Business Continuity and Crisis Management. A good example is the effective preparation of the NA Business Units for various natural catastrophes (from tornados to hurricanes to wildfires) by implementation of business impact assessments, vulnerability tables and a business continuity management system. Jim set up and chaired a NA Risk Committee with respective CEO, COO, CFO representation to oversee and review Key Risk Indicators, action plan progress and insurance-related matters. He has not only been part of the NA management team, but also a highly respected member of global enterprise level committees (e.g. the Cross-functional Insurance Risk Management Committee). Within Jim’s department, which covered in addition to general Risk Management also EHS, governmental affairs and insurance management, he has been able to create and maintain a very positive team-focused atmosphere that resulted in highly motivated staff and excellent performance. Over the period of seven years I experienced Jim Warner as a great person to work with as an individual, as a Risk Management executive and as leader with the skills to motivate people. Jim’s management and leadership skills draw from his wide range of professional experiences in combination with his personal strengths particularly the ability to build strong networks inside and outside the organization, to analyze complex situations, to abstract problems and to moderate specialists in complex root cause assessments and determination of action plans.

Jim’s biggest accomplishment was rebuilding the Risk team to align with and support our operations. Jim changed the approach of the Health & Safety and Environmental teams to become partners to our Operations team. Our plants trusted his team and as a result they reached out to his team for advice, support and assistance. Jim thinks differently and offers relevant alternatives to difficult compliance challenges. He is a courageous decision-maker. He is confident in voicing different viewpoints and challenging norms but is also seen as a team player and valuable contributor to our business. He was viewed as a calming influence as he helped to facilitate difficult decisions. Jim exhibits high integrity, loyalty and is passionate in his support our business. He shows leadership through action and not just words.
