Polygon is a protocol and a framework for building and connecting heterogeneous blockchain networks. It is designed with the intention to combine (i) sovereignty, scalability and flexibility of stand-alone blockchain networks and (ii) security, interoperability and ease of development of Ethereum. Polygon is Ethereum-compatible by design; it natively interoperates with Ethereum and leverages its proven security, infrastructure and community. Polygon natively supports two major types of participating blockchain networks: (i) fully stand-alone blockchain networks and (ii) blockchain networks that leverage "shared security", provided either by Ethereum directly or by a dedicated pool of Polygon validators.
