My masters thesis focuses on Jet Impingement heat transfer onto thin metal foams under intermediate and maximum cross-flow schemes. The objective is to characterize flow and heat transfer of metal foams and determine the Heat Transfer enhancement. I tested 80 configurations that includes various metal foams of different foam thickness and different pore densities. The optimum foam improved the Heat transfer by 100% and increased the thermal performance by 30% at fixed pumping power. All the foams tested significantly improved heat transfer. This work directly finds application in electronics cooling. Additionally, I also work on performing transient Infra-red Thermography experiments to capture cooling of gas turbine blades. I characterize cooling performance and compare the same across various blades. I, along with my lab mates, built the experimental test rig to perform this experiment with FAA stamping its approval.
