Vits and I became close working colleagues in 2013 when we joined Anglo American Platinum at the same time. Vits immediately implemented the "assets to aces" asset management programme contributing significantly to the performance improvement at Mogalakwena Complex. The teams responded to his leadership style and his contribution to the success at Mogalakwena Complex by leading the journey up the maintenance maturity curve was much appreciated. Thank you Vits.

As the Project Director, reporting into the COO, I lead the last phase of a three phase approach to take Obuasi mine from Care and Maintenance to a Tier One asset. Project employees just over 500 skilled and labour resources. This last phase is possibly the most complex in that it involves the return to service of aged underground infrastructure within a flooded mine. Included in the deliverables are a new vent shaft at 6.5 m and 945 m deep, one surface rock winder ( 6000 tpd/5100 feet depth), new high speed rail haulage and one sub vertical winder togther with new communications, dewatering and underground electrical and vent systems. Project is executed by AGA without EPCM's or SMEIPP's using contract staff and labour hire. All fabrication and construction done on site with specialized designs outsourced to various OEM's. • Project Director and General Manager Siguiri Gold Mine
      • Sep 2019 - Dec 2020

I worked as a senior executive reporting directly into the COO Africa on a rampup and turnaround project at Siguiri gold mine situated in Guinea west Africa. The role involved a technical. social and org effectiveness approach to take this operation from a circa 280koz site to a 360koz site and reduce the AISC to about $1100/oz. Technical scope included completion of a hard rock plant modification inclusive three stage crushing plant, implementing new contractors/alliance partners for mining, constructing a fines treatment plant, converting the plant to CIL to address a preg robbing challenge, a upgraded pumping system inclusive tailings disposal and a scats treatment plant. LOM was lastly increased through the justification for a new ore block some 45 km away. These changes increased throughput to 12.5 MT/annum and improved recovery by over 15%. Socially the aim was to reset the relationships with the host community and reduce the impacts of social disruptions on the operations. This was achieved through both a series of interventions inclusive national and regional governmental support in the drafting of a "protocol de Accord" which set very clear rules of engagement and modus operandi to resolve disagreements. Active and daily management, relationships and importantly mutual respect realized a significant community reset. As with so many legacy mines, structures, roles and routines become convoluted over years soon leading to both inefficiencies and frustrations ultimately affecting employee morale and discretionary effort. This part for the project worked on amongst others bring back visible leadership, various lean business techniques, clear accountabilities and targets and lastly a reduction of non value adding bureaucracy to unlock peoples value.
