Virgilio is a standout talent, a professional with deep technical knowledge, interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities. I have had the opportunity to work with Virgilio for more than fifteen years. He has always dealt huge project challenges with resilient attitude, serenity and great wisdom, inspiring and motivating team members to do their best. On the technical side, Virgilio is also a distinguished engineer, capable of leading and delivering complex and sophisticated projects in the long run. He always did his best to build great solutions, and succeeded in several projects that then were successfully deployed and field proven in large scale. It was an honor to work all these years with Virgilio, a professional and teammate of the highest trust and character. He earns my full recommendation as a team member or a leader.

My thesis topic was "Multimodal analysis of neuroimaging and transcriptomic data in genetic fronto-temporal dementia". This project was developed within the Aramis Lab (a joint research team between Inria, the Paris Brain Institute (ICM), CNRS, Inserm and Sorbonne Université), in collaboration with Dyliss (a joint research team between Inria, CNRS, IRISA and Université de Rennes 1). ➢ Conducted a study that identified microRNAs as potential progression biomarkers for C9orf72-associated frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ➢ Proposed a novel framework to compute disease progression scores for rare neurodegenerative disorders, using a supervised multimodal variational autoencoder. ➢ Collaborated with a cross-functional team of engineers, neurologists and biologists. ➢ Developed models in Python using machine learning (Scikit-learn) and deep learning (Pytorch) frameworks. The title of my Master's dissertation was "Deep learning approaches to Parkinson's disease markers discovery". ➢ Conducted a study with researchers from Inria Grenoble (formerly Mistis, now Statify team) and Grenoble Institut des Neurosciences (Neuroimaging team). ➢ Investigated anomaly detection approaches based on deep generative models. ➢ Proposed a novel framework to identify unusual patterns in multiparametric MRI data, based on autoencoders and variational autoencoders. ➢ Built a prototype in Python using machine learning (Scikit-learn) and deep learning (Pytorch) libraries. Encouraging preliminary results led to further research at the Grenoble Institut of Neuroscience. Show less

I was the manager of three geographically distributed teams (20+ engineers total), working on two product lines (SDH multiplexers and metro ethernet switches).➢ Led the entire software development life cycle, from specification to deployment and maintenance.➢ Supported engineers in developing their careers.➢ Conducted the recruitment of 10+ team members.

    • Software Engineering Team Lead
      • Jul 2007 - Oct 2010

I lead the embedded software development team (10+ engineers) of the first SDH multiplexer (high speed data transmission equipment) developed in Brazil.➢ Designed and developed (in C language) applications running on embedded Linux, for configuring, monitoring and testing SDH multiplexers.➢ Implemented Linux device drivers for low-level tasks such as FPGA programming and NAND flash memory access.➢ Provided technical training for new engineers in the team.
