Vince and I started at Earth Class Mail when the company was still very much in start-up mode. As controller, my initial directive was to take over for a third party bookkeeper and develop an accounting and reporting environment to better serve the company as it started to grow. My relationship with Vince was critical to the success of this directive. While there are many examples I could share about how Vince asistied the finance team, the one that most impressed me was the framework and reporting he developed that allowed us to properly recognize revenue under GAAP. One of Earth Class Mail’s revenue streams was from Plan Fees. Customers could sign up for one of four plans. We offered month to month as well as three, six and twelve month plans. All such charges were paid via credit card at sign up, so the entire fee for a twelve month plan was paid up front. When I started, the only reporting available was on a cash basis which was not very useful when trying to record GAAP revenue. After explaining the issue to Vince, he was able to rapidly understand the notion of deferred revenue and developed a report that showed both current month recognized revenue and remaining deferred revenue by plan type. Beyond that, it also showed future months so we had visibility to how much revenue was already

Vince and I worked together on a weekly basis from June through September 2020 while enrolled in course and collaborative project work at Syracuse University. When reflecting upon my experience working with Vince, I immediately recall his excitement for the work and his overall excellence in the field of data science. My review of his scripts (written in both R and Python) give me firsthand knowledge of his organized approach to obtaining and processing data, modeling said data, and interpreting the associated results. On multiple occasions, Vince made himself available as a resource when I needed help understanding concepts from class, implementing data preparation functions, or directing group discussion. What I most admire about Vince is his desire to understand his audience and tailor his approach to meet their needs. He is a thoughtful listener, actively requests feedback from his colleagues and his clients, and immediately incorporates that feedback into his next interaction. I am confident that he would be a valuable asset to whatever venture he chooses to pursue next. As a hiring manager of a Business Intelligence team providing analytic services to executive leadership in a company of well over 3,000 employees, I have zero hesitation in my recommendation on Vince’s behalf. He has demonstrated stellar ingenuity in the face of complex business problems, swift aptitude for data analysis in both R and Python and precise focus in crafting his approach to meet the needs of his audience. I wish him well in his future endeavors.
