LAGADO architects is a serious studio for playful architecture. We focus on the design of living environments that create opportunities for use and encourage social interaction. We work on commissions but also initiate our own projects and do research on various topics at the interface between architecture, behaviour, usage and design. One of our specialties is public space design, with a special interest in creating open environments for multiple uses. We are also equally experienced in designing houses, refurbishments and interiors. LAGADO architects was founded in Rotterdam in 2011 by Maria Vasiloglou and Victor Verhagen. Our name is a hommage to the architect of the Grand Academy of Lagado in the classic story of Gulliver's Travels, who tried to find out how to be able to build a house starting from the roof and working downward to the foundations. He justified his research by the fact that both the spider and the bee actually do build their homes starting from the top. This behavourial thinking combined with taking inspiration and motivations from outside of the architectural box is what made us name our studio after him. Winner Architectenweb Awards Best Schoolbuilding 2020. Winner BNA Best Building of 2020 category Stimulating Environments. Team Fedlev won the design competition for the extension of the Rietveld arts academy in Amsterdam. I joined the team as an invited freelance architect for the development of the sketch design. Fedlev is a multidisciplinairy team led and initiated by Paulien Bremmer with Maze de Boer, Luca Carboni and Sandra Stanionyte, who won the private competition by the Rietveld Academy.
