In collaboration with RocketLab and MIT, we are part of the first private mission to Venus, expected in 2025. This mission aims to analyze the chemical composition of the Venusian atmosphere with hopes of detecting organic compounds that could lead to the development of life. In the high-acidity environment of Venus' clouds, concentrated sulfuric acid allows for organic chemistry that would be otherwise impossible. This allows for us to model this environment in the laboratory, hypothesize reaction pathways, and spectroscopically analyze the solution to predict the behavior of these molecules on Venus. These data will be used as references, which will be compared to spectroscopic data collected by the probe in 2025 to better understand the chemical possibilities on our planetary neighbor's atmosphere. Research at the Castellano Laboratory uses organic synthesis, physical organic chemistry, spectroscopic methods, and computation to design, prepare, and study novel organic molecules that show unique and useful behavior. We are interested in self-assembly, a process through which individual molecules aggregate via weak non-covalent interactions, in order to develop new approaches to access functional organic materials. My work at the Castellano Laboratory involves the design, synthesis, and characterization of [3.3]Paracyclophane ([3.3]pCp) carbamate and urea derivatives. By altering the identity of pi-donor and pi-acceptor groups on the compound, we are able to modulate the strength of their self-assembly in solution through varied solvent polarity and temperature. At the Reznikov Laboratory, we focus on discovering novel therapeutics for respiratory illnesses, particularly asthma (viral and allergic) and cystic fibrosis. Using animal models, we are able to improve drug development, design, and delivery for application in humans.
