The acceptance process involves testing the waste with a variety of wet chemical techniques as well as completing paperwork and computer data entry. As the waste streams are constantly changing, attention to detail and the ability to adapt quickly to new conditions is essential. In this job there is a need to work quickly but accurately even when under pressure. I have recently been acting as shift leader. This has given me responsibility for ensuring that tanker turn around time is kept to a minimum by prioritising these samples around others which still have to be completed within a tight deadline. Whilst deputising for the laboratory manager, I had to liaise with other WRG sites and various haulage companies to arrange the delivery of acid which is essential to the treatment process. I also made operational decisions, in conjunction with the treatment plant manager, to alter standard treatment methods for non compliant waste, thus ensuring that no environmental regulations were violated. I am competent in the use of an ICP and have used a portable IR reader for a project in the detection of mineral oil in waste samples. I am responsible for the ordering of consumables for the laboratory which includes sourcing new materials and equipment and price negotiations. I have completed courses in fire prevention, manual handling and a Red Cross first aid course. I am also a fire marshal for the site and am responsible for checking the fire extinguishers and fire doors and for the maintenance of the first aid boxes and emergency stores. A TOC analyser, total dissolved solids meter and chloride probe have recently been purchased for the lab and I have been responsible for the set up and method development for the equipment as well as training other members of staff in their use. I have also worked at "Stopgap" at the busy York Central Railway Station. Here I was in charge of a food kiosk where I was fully responsible for cashing up, sales, stock rotation, customer relations and health and hygiene. I worked well under pressure, having to act on my own initiative and was able to interact well with other staff members.
