My main interest is related with pancreatic cancer, cell plasticity, epigenetic and transcription with a special interest in the c-MYC oncogene, how interacts with chromatin and regulates gene expression during transformation and cancer progression. In this direction, we have characterized the chromatin remodeler BPTF as a c-MYC co-factor required for its transcriptional activity as a promising therapeutic target. My goal is to identify new chromatin remodelers with prognostic and therapeutic potential in pancreatic cancer using genetic based screenings. Show less

In 2010 I came back to Spain to work in Francisco Real´s laboratory at the CNIO, a reference lab for pancreatic cancer. Since then I have been involved in several projects related with the c-MYC oncogene in different contexts. One of the projects in which I have been involved was the role of c-MYC in acinar plasticity and its implications in Pancreatic cancer; this work was published in Gut. Moreover I was co-director of two Ph.D students involeved in different proyects: i) The characterization of the chromatin remodeler BPTF as a c-MYC co-factor, this work was published in Nature Communications; ii) The therapeutic potential of the Choline kinase inhibitor MN58b in pancreatic cancer, this project has been published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. After my Ph.D I joined Dr Luis Alvarez-Vallina´s laboratory in the Immunology Department at the Hospital Puerta de Hierro. This was a short but very productive period; I was involved in the role of endostatin in angiogenesis and cell adhesion. We were able to generate a chimeric protein with therapeutic potential -blocking tumor progression and metastasis- that was patented and published in International Journal of Cancer. In the same year I obtained a fellowship from the "Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia" and I moved to the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan, one of the best monographic Cancer Research Hospitals in Europe. I joined Bruno Amati´s laboratory, a prestigious group in the study of the c-MYC oncogene. In 2006, I was awarded with an European Institute of Oncology fellowship to continue my research. My main interest in that period was the postransductional modifications that regulates c-MYC activity. We discovered the dual control of c-MYC by the tyrosine kinases c-Abl and Bcr-Abl. This work, with important implications in breast cancer and chronic myeloid leukemia, was published in Oncogene. During five years in Bruno Amati´s laboratory I learned several genome wide techniques and mentored students Show less

    • Ph.D Student
      • Jan 2000 - Sep 2004

To start my Ph.D I joined Ricardo Sanchez-Prieto´s laboratory in the Pathology Department at the Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid. I characterized the signaling pathways controlled by the chimeric protein Bcr-Abl in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and its role in chemo resistance; this work was published in Biochemical Journal. I established collaborations with other lab members dissecting the role p38 MAPK and PI3K pathways in Cisplatin responses. Hence this period was extremely productive with eight papers in international journals. To complete my training I moved to the Hematology department at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. I joined Dr Junia Melo´s Laboratory, one of the leading groups in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, this internship was supported by the "Fundacion Leucemia y Linfoma". I obtained my Ph.D in 2004 with the maximum qualification in the Universidad Autonoma. Show less
