The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. With over 21,000 members we are the biggest membership group in the sight loss sector and the voice of people with macular conditions. We provide free information and support to improve lives and ensure no one has to face macular disease alone. There are around 300 Macular Society support groups around the UK and beyond. We fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease. I am currently working to help expand and develop a sustainable peer support network for people living with macular conditions, within the Yorkshire and NE Lincolnshire region. Primary contact for all our support services across this region by supporting, developing and facilitating meetings, helping to recruit, retain and manage volunteers, as well as develop and maintain relationships with relevant services in Yorkshire and NE Lincolnshire. In my current role as Community Advice Officer at Sight Support (Hull and East Yorkshire), I cover ten postcodes across the East Riding of Yorkshire. My role entails supporting all service users through home visits, advising and assisting them with any inquiries via telephone. I assess support needs and advise to help establish each service user's individual circumstances and requirements. This includes demonstrating technology solutions such as visual aids, their use and operation and any magnification or lighting requirements. My work also involves risk assessments, maintaining database records, making and recording referrals to low vision clinics and sensory teams. Another key aspect of my work, is offering support throughout the sight loss journey, promoting positive thoughts and feelings and suggesting various outlets to alleviate feelings of potential isolation such as social gatherings and support groups, as well as supplying visual aids and equipment.
