I'm a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist working on the acute stroke ward and on the stroke rehab unit. I work with people with acquired communication disorders (e.g.aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria, cognitive communication difficulties) and also with people with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). I work closely with other Allied Health Professionals, hospital staff on the ward as well as with other agencies (social services, clinical psychology, psychiatry and voluntary organisations). In my previous roles within the Adult Speech & Language Therapy team, I worked in a Community team and also in Early Supported Discharge for Stroke team. This has enabled me to gain broad experience of working in a variety of settings and at different stages of people's journeys (acute to long term rehab). Working in the community team has also been extremely valuable in terms of gaining experience of a wide ranging of acquired neurological disorders and their varied assessment and management methods. This was a priceless opportunity to work with children with severe/profound and multiple learning difficulties in pre-school and post 16- classes, often entailing the use of alternative communication strategies/devices with pupils who were not able to verbally communicate.
