Working with Van was one of the highlights of my advisory experience with the Student Leadership Internship. As the leader of the Campus Globalization team, Van exhibited a professionalism and integrity uncommon in students her age. She was a kind, fair, loyal, and hard-working role model for her fellow interns. It was a pleasure mentoring and learning from her. - Tracy Wiedman, Faculty Advisor, Student Leadership Internship, Tokyo International University

I worked with Van as her Advisor in a student leader internship program at Tokyo International University (TIU). Van was already an established intern when I first joined the program, and was serving as the team’s Leader (about thirty interns in total). I constantly relied on her to explain the principles and practices of the program, and she was always very helpful and professional in her leadership role. She has a strong sense of ownership, and was always able to complete her assigned tasks in a timely manner. Even when visitors raised issues or made complaints about program rules or interns, Van showed maturity and swift decision-making skills. She always demonstrated determination in creating a professional work atmosphere for the entire group, and was effective at leading weekly team meetings. What makes this team both exciting yet challenging to lead is its diversity. TIU students come from about sixty different countries, which forces interns to learn intercultural communication and problem-solving skills. Without Van’s strong work ethic and motivation to grow and push her own boundaries, my job as an Advisor would have been much more difficult. Van was not afraid to ask questions or for assistance if issues or tasks became too much for her to handle on her own, which I believe to be a sign of strength: knowing when to ask for help. Based on her performance in this student internship program, I believe Van gained valuable experience that has molded her into a strong leader. It would be a pleasure to work with her again, if the opportunity ever arose.
