    • Metabolic Engineering Project - Microbial Optimization for Metabolite Production
      • Apr 2023 - Apr 2023

I successfully completed a metabolic engineering project using Python and Jupyter Notebook to optimize a microbe for metabolite production. The project involved selecting a microbe from the BiGG database, identifying a metabolite of interest, and analyzing the reactions and genes involved in its production. I performed Flux Balance Analysis (FBA) on the wild-type microbe, simulated gene knockouts, and used StrainDesign to identify potential gene deletions for optimization. I then compared the engineered microbe's performance to the wild-type strain and explored the production of a non-native metabolite by adding new reactions to the metabolic model, supported by literature and database references. • Research Internship
      • Sep 2021 - May 2022

At IMT Lucca, I undertook a research internship focusing on a thesis project that explored the correlation between muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and non-invasive bio-signals. This research aimed to identify potential predictors of sympathetic activity and contribute to our understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. I developed a Matlab toolbox to analyze MSNA and its relationship with non-invasive bio-signals, such as blood pressure, ECG, PPG, and air flow. I processed and extracted signal features, assessed their accuracy, and investigated temporal relations between MSNA and peripheral events. The toolbox automatically analyzed signals, cleaned artifacts, and extracted a wide range of features based on extensive literature review. I implemented an automated procedure to reduce noise in raw MSNA signals and estimated the Mean Neurogram for each cardiac cycle while detecting and characterizing impulses' bursts. Additionally, I examined temporal relationships between MSNA events and cardiac/respiratory events, inspecting consistent variations in MSNA features time-locked to peripheral events. I investigated variations potentially triggered by sudden drops in the pulse wave amplitude (PWA) signal, measured by finger photoplethysmography (PPG), known to reflect peripheral vasoconstriction. During this internship, I worked both remotely and in research laboratories with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, medical professionals, physicists, and linguists. This collaborative environment allowed me to develop my research and technical skills while contributing to critical health-related issues. Overall, my experience at IMT Lucca provided valuable insights into applying advanced analytical tools in biomedical research. Show less
