Joined the then newly established Client Coverage, Global Banking (known as GWB/ Global Wholesale Banking then) team as one of its pioneer/ early core team members under the new House of Maybank in 2011. With an aptitude for relationship building and generally a people person, pivoted from DCM product specialist role to client centric and product-agnostic/solutions-driven client coverage role which focused on holistic client solutioning covering debt and equity. Drove the origination, cross-sells and management of internal & external stakeholders, including C-suites and boards, across the Bank’s Global Banking product and solution offerings, as well as within the larger Maybank Group including end financing and private wealth management. Pivotal in building, developing and maintaining client relationships for a dedicated client portfolio comprising key MY-based and industry leading conglomerates (including sponsor-owned entities) and large corporates across multi sectors with focus on real estate property development and construction sector (including REITs), telco, payTV (both service provider and satellite owners), O&G (predominantly upstream service providers, FPSO owners) and leisure (integrated resorts, hospitality). Highly solutions and outcome driven, and a strong believer of achieving win-win and fair outcomes for all stakeholders. Show less

It was exciting times then - being in the DCM space pre-CMSA era, riding through the GFC and being part of the capital markets growth and development, especially the Islamic financing/ Sukuk space. The close to 7 years experience with the close-knit DCM family was the best foundational years which shaped my banking career. Grew from a junior supporting the team across deal origination and execution, to independently managing end-to-end issuance process and collaborating with key stakeholders, both external and internal (issuers, rating, solicitors, tax consultants, reporting accountants, trustees, syndicate/treasury, relationship managers, credit risk, legal, facility agency etc). Product innovation and best-in-class execution were imperatives for the numerous pitches and deals executed, which included corporate bonds/Sukuk, sub-debt/ Tier 1&2 bank capital fundraising, project financing, securitisation/ true-blue ABS structures and bond buyback exercises. It certainly did take the entire village aka the DCM family to grow the then aspiring young banker in me - from the very kind, supportive and certainly nothing short of bright and smart bosses and mentors to colleagues and friends. We celebrated and supported each other’s highs and lows, and as a team, we continuously strived to contribute to securing and maintaining our top 3 league table position over the years. Show less

Learned that only 2 things in life are certain - death and TAX! In what now seems like a short 1-year stint at PwC then, the basic tax knowledge (and ability to decipher the tax bible aka Income Tax Act), hands-on experience (and appreciation for tax structuring), work discipline, and of course, the valued PwC branding - paved the way for my eventual close to 20-year banking career, being the only budding junior with tax experience when I landed my first investment banking job. Covered 4 tax submission cycles, same 4 tax estimates cycles (baffled me then why corporates had to have different year ends - some March, June and September instead of the normal December year-end) and numerous tax appeal cases and RPGT submissions. Portfolio included large Japanese corporates, global pharmaceutical names and local property developer and construction players. Had the Toastmasters experience (the uh, ah and la!) too! Show less

I was in Form 4 then. Continued with the same arrangement until I started college, and managed to convince the Sales & Marketing Director to position a promoter at Jusco (now AEON) in Klang - just so that I could fill up the position! Did that on a part-time basis, but this time round, on 5-9 on weekdays and 12-9 on weekends, right up to the last weekend before I started my professional career with PwC and had to say goodbye to a good 6-year journey with Philips. Not forgetting the wonderful times I got to travel by flight to places I had never been before - Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, for marketing roadshows. Show less
