My team creates and maintains pipelines for the analysis of different kind of biological data (NGS sequencing mostly). We mostly use Nextflow as wrapper for our own scripts written in Python, bash. We also make large use of Docker containers in order to make reproducible the environment in which we perform calculation. Our sites have internal compute nodes, but we have also experience with cloud computing with Azure. During my working days, I jump from pure bioinformatic topics to IT ones, so I never get bored! The focus of the research was to uncover the role of a ubiquitin-ligase enzyme on protein stability and gene expression. By using the CRISPR-Cas9 technique I generated clones bearing an inactive ligase and, by performing molecular biology and bioinformatic experiments, I characterized the altered functionality of those clones. During my thesis project I focused on RNA-seq data analysis, to quantify differentially expressed genes between tumor and normal tissues. I used data from TCGA and GEO databases performing my analysis in R. The group of statistically relevant genes was then characterized in order to find the underlying biological meaning. I then characterized human cell lines before and after the overexpression of a key transcription factor found in the bioinformatic analysis. Thanks to this experience I learned to performed some of the key NGS data analysis and I also have a clear image of how those experiments are conducted. Show less

The most rewarding working experience during my studies was as waitress was in a mountain hut. I had not only to be a waitress and to clean rooms, but I also had to listen to people needs and live with my coworkers 24 hours per day. It was a strong experience, even if the landscape lightens the efforts, but improved my ability to stay with people and helped me knowing my limits and qualities.
