Project Teach College and Career Intern

Two months ago, I started my internship search with a heavy heart because of the financial burden and peer pressure. Two weeks of constant stress later, I stepped back and thought "Hmm what is the good reason to have an internship here?". After two more weeks, I realized the only reason to work (at all) is the meaning of the work and whom I work with. Unsurprisingly, I, then, confidently compiled a worksheet of over 20 places, ranked them in orders of suitability, meaning, and benefits, set a goal to apply for two positions every day, and I did. But nothing happened! A dozen places never replied. Two politely turned me down. Again, I questioned if I had done anything wrong. Well, even great efforts, thought-out strategies, and strong organizational skills cannot guarantee anything. Thursday, Sept 8th, Harvard Ed Portal sent me an email stating their interest in my application. Friday, Sept 9th, I had the first interview after nearly 2 months of trying. I repeated the mantra "You only need one acceptance" countless times. I practiced a 30-sec pitch to introduce myself. That noon, I got accepted. I know I could have simply put here: "Uyen got the internship after her first interview" but that wouldn't be fair for others who are seeking a job to read. It was not easy. It was frustrating and full of rejections, just like anything good we try to bring or achieve. The wait was long and uncomfortable. Above all, the greatest thing that happened to me was not the internship, but the fact that I have grown a little more - and I appreciate that growth more than anything. Show less
