Sioux Lookout is a small town with a hospital, ER, and serves the far north. They have CT, gen surg back up and around 40-50 beds. It's generally the 1st stop for undifferentiated patients. We'll stabilize and ship for specialist procedures (e.g. PCI) but typically keep the patients in our hospital. Trauma, sepsis, ACS, and respiratory issues are common enough. In the north, we have dealt with emergency obstetrics, often have COPD exacerbations, CHF, undifferentiated chest and abdo pain… Show more Sioux Lookout is a small town with a hospital, ER, and serves the far north. In the north, we have dealt with emergency obstetrics, often have COPD exacerbations, CHF, undifferentiated chest and abdo pain etc., the clinics are often internal medicine type with patients that have rarely seen an MD and have numerous chronic diseases with their sequelae. Likewise the hospitalist time is taking care of patients with often conflicting issues; they would often be internal medicine level patients in a tertiary care setting. I predominantly deliver service to remote communities where there may be a winter road but is predominantly air access. I will deliver a mix of family and acute care; basically you are the only physician and deal with whatever comes through the door. Chainsaw injuries to prenatal care, seizures to chronic diabetes management, mental health and addictions to emergency obstetrics, it is full scope general practice.
