  I work as a Residential Counselor in a Level 3 Group Home setting. I work with adolescents from ages 10-18 years old with emotional and behavioral issues. In this role, there is a large focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Aggression Replacement Therapy, the development of coping skills as well as socially appropriate behaviors and effective communication skills. As a residential counselor, I am responsible for day to day tasks with our clients such as ensuring school attendance, preparation of meals, transportation, and medication distribution. This job opportunity has helped me to develop healthy professional and personal boundaries, and has allowed me to use my skills to help many adolescents discover their potential for a healthier future. As a result of my time working in direct contact with many clients, I have also gained knowledge and skills related to working with LGBTQ+ clients, clients dealing with substance use/abuse, clients with a history in gang affiliation, and many clients with traumatic backgrounds. I have grown my abilities to work with each client in a sensitive, appropriate, and effective manner. I achieved the status of Qualified Professional in April of 2019, and am skilled in training new staff, completing shift notes, filing incident reports, creating client-specific long and short term goals based on their Person Centered Plans, managing household inventory, scheduling appointments and travel, and maintaining appropriate communication throughout each client's care team to ensure each individual is on the same page about clients' treament plan. I have been part of a small team made up of Directors, Therapists, Foster Care Coordinators, and House Directors, in which we are continuing education on how to provide Trauma Informed Care to our clients.
