Russell Rockne
Tyler joined our research group in the fall of 2009 as a sophomore with an interest in computer science. Tyler came highly recommended from a fellow student and was quickly employed as a student researcher. Even as a sophomore, Tyler demonstrated that he was capable of independent software design and development and would be a great asset to our work. Our lab focuses on a variety of problems related to invasive brain tumors known as gliomas. We develop mathematical modeling techniques to predict the extent of invasion as well as the future behavior of gliomas. Our research relies heavily on data collected from patients in our study, which consists primarily of measurements of tumor volume on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tyler quickly made substantial improvements to the data collection software used by dozens of student researchers that increased both its efficiency and usability. Tyler has made incredible contributions to every aspect of our research software environment, including building an entire suite of software to run model simulations including pre- and post-processing of the data. Tyler constantly keeps the user experience in mind, and develops his code/software accordingly. Tyler dedicates himself 100% to his work and has an admirable work ethic. Tyler has worked well as a team player within our research group of over 20 students and staff. I recommend Tyler for any position that benefits from immersive, tireless dedication to the task at hand and a persistent curiosity. I will be sad to see Tyler graduate and move on, but I know that Tyler will be a great asset to any team he joins.
