I worked directly with Tyler during his time as an environmental scientist intern with Roux Associates. Tyler's work ethic, enthusiasm for the job, and eagerness to learn and apply new skills made him an invaluable asset to the firm. Tyler's involvement in numerous environmental remediation projects, from pre-job planning to field execution to analysis and reporting, allowed him to quickly develop his skill set and, by the end of his internship, he was working independently in many aspects of the job. Tyler was an outstanding team player and a great coworker, and it would be my pleasure to recommend him with my highest regards to any organization seeking a professional with Tyler's background and expertise.

I was selected by campus Sustainability leadership to operate as a consultant to 28 campus offices. In this role, I took my skills outside the classroom and applied my sustainability knowledge in a real-world setting. I served as the sole point person for my 28 offices, managing all communication, performing bi-annual audits, identifying areas of poor performance, and developing plans to address these areas. In doing so I simultaneously cut my office’s operating costs and environmental footprint. In my time in the fellowship program I was also able to identify ways in which the program could be improved. In response, I developed a new facet to the auditing process in which “engagement” within the office is analyzed. This will promote widespread participation in the program within an office, and spread greater awareness about the impact of sustainable business practices. Working one-on-one with offices in these situations helped me to mature as a problem solver and provided me with experience developing strategic plans based on client needs. I also learned how to communicate with clients about their needs, lay out options to address these needs, and help them understand the benefits of addressing these areas. Show less

Over my time with Roux Associates I was entrusted to execute a variety of tasks including groundwater sampling, transmissivity testing, assessments of phytoremediation plots, community air monitoring, compilation of Health & Safety plans, and contributing to compliance reports. Roux Associates manages environmental compliance for many former and current ExxonMobil properties. As a result I traveled across the Northeast, performing activities at 12 different field sites, 6 of which were ExxonMobil sites. The Industri-Plex Superfund Site in Woburn, MA was a particularly high-profile site. I carried out field events here on 11 occasions, and was team leader on 3 of these occasions. I was also selected to participate in a groundwater investigation and sampling event at a former Exxon Mobil site in Rochester, NY. The investigation was completed as part of a litigation case between Exxon Mobil and the City of Rochester. At the end of the summer I was invited back to work full-time after graduation, but elected to pursue higher education. Show less

Resource Options is an Environmental Staffing Agency that provided me with opportunities to participate in projects across the landscape of the Environmental Services industry. I gained experience in Environmental Consulting, Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal, Environmental Compliance, and Site Remediation, among other areas. However, the true value of this internship was that I gained experience working with different types of people. In most cases I would work on a project for 2-3 days. This meant I had to develop skills in how to quickly cultivate relationships and foster a sense of trust with those I was working with. The nature of this work also helped me to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Many times, I would come on to a project with no background context and no experience in what I was going to be doing. As a result, I had to learn how to adapt to different situations, and become comfortable with learning on the job and being put in situations I had never been exposed to. Ultimately, I developed a confidence in myself that in foreign situations, I could effectively understand the task at hand, learn quickly on the job, and successfully complete the project. Show less
