Graduate Student in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Projects: Elucidate the function of the ER membrane protein atlastin and determine, by structure-function analysis, the mechanism by which atlastin promotes membrane fusion. Concurrent projects included the characterization SNARE proteins and the SNARE binding protein, complexin. Methodologies employed: Recombinant protein expression and purification, low pressure chromatography (AKTAprime), FPLC, gel filtration, ion exchange and affinity chromatography, HPLC, immunoblot analysis, assays of enzyme kinetics, analytical ultracentrifugation, cell culturing (E. coli, S. cerevisiae, and S2 and Sf21 cell lines), confocal and fluorescent microscopy, negative stain TEM, molecular biology / subcloning, site-directed mutagenesis, UV/visible and fluorescent spectroscopy, CD spectroscopy. Laboratory Responsibilities: Shared responsibility in purchasing, oversaw training and use of preparatory and analytical ultracentrifuges, fluorescent plate reader, liquid scintillation counter, AKTAprime.
