Internship - Clinical and Pharmacological Research

The goal of the internship is to get involved in scientific research and healthcare. Tycho will be working on at least two projects: the PERFU-study and the DNAmedicationpass -project. Additionally, he gets the opportunity to take courses at the hospital (e.g. blood sampling), to work with students and to assist pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare professionals and offer basic support. The main objective of the ‘Personalized prediction and regulation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) Exposure Study’ or PERFU-study is to determine the percentage of patients who achieve an optimal 5-FU exposure within two dose cycles of 5-FU. Among others, 5-FU is a widely used chemotherapeutic drug to treat a variety of cancers. The ultimate goal of the study is to validate whether ‘Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of 5-FU’ is an effective tool to regulate individual 5-FU exposure in order to increase efficacy and reduce side effects. Amsterdam UMC works together with the LUMC and Z-Index BV to realize the implementation of DNAmedicationpasses as part of the pharmacogenetic project. With the use of personal DNAmedicationpasses general practitioners, medical specialists and pharmacists can obtain personalized pharmacogenetic medication advice. The pass is pre-emptively provided to patients, who have gone through an extensive whole exome DNA screening. The general tasks and responsibilities during the internship will consist of accompanying and guiding patients, conducting data management, processing patient surveys and overall assisting other researchers where possible.
