In the PRECISION project, I've collaborated with clinicians, bioinformaticians, and biologists to build classifiers that distinguish harmless from hazardous DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ, a breast cancer precursor). These classifiers employ molecular data, such as RNA expression, DNA copy number, DNA points mutations. Additionally, we have analysed the images of pathology slide stained with immune cell markers. To analyse DCIS progression over time, we have employed Cox-models and developed a weighting scheme to adjust for biased sampling. I've also supervised master students in projects involving spatial proteomics and deep learning from sequencing data for drug response prediction. Show less

Worked on three major projects. First, I've related biological signals from breast tumours to images from breast MRI and published this in the top Radiology journal. Second, I've developed and published a methodology to characterize tumours by integrating multiple molecular data types and linking to existing knowledge. This was applied to breast and lung cancer data sets. Third, I've collaborated in the international RATHER project to character the breast cancer subtype ILC (invasive lobular cancer), resulting in a patent and my most highly cited paper. Show less

My masters project at the Netherlands Cancer Institute concerns predicting phenotype, such as patient survival, from high-throughput cancer data. Using biological knowledge from pathway databases, I try to build a classification model that is interpretable by biologists, creates insight into the data, and facilitates knowledge discovery. IBM Extreme Blue Internship. During this innovation program I worked in an international team of four students. We started with a broad business challenge, came up with forty exciting preliminary ideas, and created a solution, including a business plan and a technical prototype. I enjoyed working in a diverse team, being challenged, and investing in my professional development. IBM Extreme Blue Internship.
