Myself and another student were the first occupational therapy students to complete a role emerging placement within HMP Chelmsford. Based with the IDTS (integrated drug treatment system) team this placement gave me great insights into how the role of occupational therapy could be developed for the male prison population. During this placement I was able to complete assessments predominantly completed by substance misuse nurses and health care assistants and identify how the role of occupational therapy is different and could compliment what is already provided. The prison service is a particular interest of mine and this placement allowed me to gain valuable knowledge which helped me to develop a research proposal as part of my masters which looked at the role of creativity for male prisoners in the uk.
