Public Policy Intern

May 2023 - Present
On the public policy team at SCCF I am not only apprenticing environmental policy experts, lawyers, and marine biologists but I am actively participating in land development policy change debates concerning the islands. I am also creating a position paper arguing for the removal of federal subsidies to U.S. sugar cane production in the farm bill to be presented to D.C. officials. Lastly, I am studying the effects of hurricanes and El Ninos on harmful algal blooms in Southwest Florida. I was one out of 240 applicants to receive this role as a Green Teams intern for PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University. Myself and 3 other team members were partnered with Hackensack Meridian Health. Together, we quantified the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the hospitals of Hackensack Meridian Health from 2018-2020 as a result of 2 levels of scope emissions. Scope 1 emissions were direct emissions produced by the hospitals and include greenhouse gases released as a result of waste anesthetic gases, mobile combustion from fleet vehicles, and refrigerant use. Scope 2 includes stationary combustion such as natural gas and purchased electricity. After quantifying these emissions for HMH we suggested carbon reduction strategies that would lower the hospitals’ carbon footprint. These strategies were also financially beneficial as they would have a return on investment of only 1-2 years if implemented. Show less
