Trent is passionate about the communications industry and exhibited enthusiasm and a desire to learn throughout his internship with Xstrata Coal. His curiosity and willingness to ask questions and debate issues is impressive. He quickly grasped a number of key issues affecting the coal industry and also the role that coal plays in society. Trent has very good techical and writing skills and a keen interest in social media and its potential to transform the way businesses communicate with stakeholders. Trent's easy going and friendly persona made him an excellent fit within our team. I would strongly recommend Trent for entry-level roles in the media / PR / communications sector as he has the potential to develop into a very strong communications professional in the years ahead.

During his internship with Xstrata Coal, Trent demonstrated solid technical skills and a good understanding of the Communications practice. He has very good, well-developed writing skills, and was quick to grasp and interpret complex issues relating to the mining sector. Trent showed initiative and a keenness to take on additional tasks beyond those assigned to him, and in a short space of time fitted well into the Communications team and alongside other co-workers. Trent brought a fresh perspective to the projects he was assigned to, and showed genuine interest in understanding our business and how communications strategies could be shaped to address a variety of internal and external stakeholder needs. I would highly recommend Trent for an entry level Communications role, either inhouse or at an agency.

I helped design, implement and manage media relations and public affairs strategies for a number of UK-based clients. As part of Portland's corporate division, I predominantly support high profile FTSE 250 companies including those in the energy, financial services and airline sector. I also work on legal dispute communications in partnership with leading law firms. I'm fortunate to work with stakeholders across Fleet St, Westminster and the City everyday, and relish the opportunity to be part of effective and impactful campaigns, both here in the UK, and globally.

Working within Optus’ Corporate Affairs team, this role saw me act as an official spokesperson for Optus in the Australian media. Key tasks included managing and monitoring company issues in the media, preparing and delivering corporate responses, liaising with journalists to understand their requirements and deadlines, writing media releases and other materials for proactive media pitches, preparing interview and speech briefs for senior executives, manning our 24/7 media line and approving content for Optus’ social media pages. Similarly, I also sat on a number of go-to-market meetings to provide public relations advice and support for project and product launches. I also worked with stakeholders across the business to advise on PR issues when they arose in an effort to enhance and maintain the reputation of our brand. As a member of the Corporate Affairs team, I also worked alongside the company’s PR agency to help manage and deliver outcomes on a range of PR activities. Overall, in this exciting and fast-moving role I was tasked, alongside my team, to help develop, maintain and improve positive media coverage for Optus in a wide range of outlets including print, online, radio, television and social media.
