I have been a volunteer with our local Young Life area since 2012, and stepped in as a volunteer interim Area Director in Fall of 2016. This soon led to me coming on part-time staff as the Area Director in March of 2017. This job involves managing a team of volunteers who help me run weekly or bi-weekly events for middle school and high school students. Young Life is an international outreach ministry to students who do not attend church. The ministry is relational, in that the focus is on mentorship rather than simple preaching. My duties as Area Director include planning events, facilitating meetings, communicating with students and parents, orchestrating out-of-state camping trips, fundraising, and community outreach. I now work in a second department at the YMCA, as childcare services were stretched pretty thin and needed some help. Assisting K-5 students with getting their homework done (they are on an every-other-day schedule at school) has been a growing experience for me. I am more comfortable working with older students, but my previous tutoring skills have transferred well.

In working the Welcome Center at the Wood River Community YMCA, I have learned to adapt quickly to changing software, and grown my skills in training coworkers and patron relations. I never used to think of myself as a customer service type, but it brings me great joy when a Y member on the phone mentions how helpful I have been and asks for me by name the next time they call. This job involves a lot of multitasking, and helping out with almost every other department at the Y in some capacity. Since Covid, the job has also evolved into a position of rule-enforcing and explaining. Show less

This job involved several different responsibilities, some patron-facing and some behind the scenes. While on desk, I helped patrons check out and turn in books, reconcile fines, find materials they needed or discover ones they might be interested in, and with tech support. While in the back office, I wrapped books, managed interlibrary loan mailings and patron notices, and helped out in several different departments with shelving, weeding, and book displays. So much goes on in a library that it is really tough to summarize it all in one paragraph! Show less
