Warrington, United Kingdom I founded a development agency that focusses on Engineering Excellence within healthcare. We helped with some of the biggest projects in the UK, providing SME and development capabilities in a range of national services including NHS 111, 111 Online, NHS.UK, NHS Pathways, NHS App, NHS Login. Technical evangelist for the NHS 111 programme team. I have designed the technical landscape for the programme and I am now managing the roll out nationally. I have redesigned interoperability across urgent and emergency care and technically specified and evaluated the procurements. I also assist with service readiness assurance from a technical perspective and work with local areas to understand the technological options when value adding to the service specification.

It was time to work on a national role after spending almost a decade working at a local NHS level, NHS Direct was a national service providing a valuable tele-health service with nurse led triage at its core. In this role I helped deliver the technological elements of the initial NHS 111 pilots in which NHS Direct was a provider of 2/3. Some key achievements were replacing a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) with NHS Pathways. Together with my team, we built interoperability standards that changed the way primacy of patients was transferred from one healthcare service to another. This was in realtime, a first in healthcare that needed tight collaboration with operations and clinical teams to deliver safely. We built architecture, that demonstrated how this might work at a national level, using technology to underpin the operating models that patients needed. I wrote a series of papers on my strategic thoughts about the technological issues that would face us as we scaled this to millions of patients per year. It was my work here helping the Department of Health understand those issues and how we might resolve them that led to them making interoperability a key part of the NHS 111 Service Specification and putting the appropriate team in place to deliver it. We built a system that changed the way we managed anticoagulation patients and how their drugs were prescribed. We focused on the clinicians workflow and the needs of the patient. Integration with the Sunquest laboratory system enabled deep integration with a patient results using HL7 messaging. We integrated with SMS to remind patients to turn up for their appointments leading to a reduction in DNA's. We built reusable modules that integrated with TotalCare PAS using HL7 messages and custom MUMPS/M Cache routines to match patients across our web based systems, this ensured we had an identity solution across our platforms, before NHS Numbers were becoming a thing. We built an intranet, just as they were becoming a thing, moving information online instead of locked away on unsearchable shared drives. This transformed the sharing and publishing culture across a trust. It enabled new web based applications to be quickly accessed. It was all classic ASP with custom COM components where required.
