The establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 was a major milestone in the regional economic integration agenda in ASEAN, offering opportunities in the form of a huge market of US $2.6 trillion and over 622 million people. In 2014, the AEC was collectively the third largest economy in Asia and the seventh largest in the world. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is comprised of 10 countries which are Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia. The charter of Emerson’s Southeast Asia Executive Management Team was to assess the corporation’s current state of preparedness to capitalize on the advent of the AEC. This required a determination of potential in all served markets, identification of gaps in capabilities to enable capture of projected market growth, and development of strategies for investment in infrastructure and headcount required to close the gaps. • Director, Strategic Marketing & Operations
      • Jan 1993 - Sep 1994

The liaison office was established during the currency crisis at the time when Mr. Manmohan Singh, who later became Prime Minister, was Finance Minister. The response of the Government of India to the crisis resulted in sweeping changes to archaic protectionist laws including those that limited foreign investors to a maximum stake of 40% in local enterprises. Emerson had a number of Indian Joint Ventures at the time in which they were holding the maximum of 40%. This was expected to change in the coming years and in fact did. The liaison office was established as a base from which the political and business dynamics could be studied from within the country to facilitate development of long range strategic plans as to how to move forward in response to the changing environment. Today most of Emerson’s operations in India are wholly owned. Show less
