CHRISTIAN PORTAL

I worked with Tony quite three years in Ethiopia. Tony was the person in charge of developing a new approach to credit for farmers. I highly appreciated the talent of Tony to explain basics and eventually advanced of the finance to people. He can adapt his explanations to any audience and make simple what looks complicated at the beginning. I was impress by Tony's perseverance and adaptation capacity. Imagination and creativity are also strong points of Tony. As colleague he is a person very attaching with who I like working. I believe that Tony's experience in finance and banking particularly in developing environment is an asset for any organisation. I highly recommend Tony equally to private sector, governments and consulting companies. He is certainly one of the best people I know capable to answer rapidly to any challenge in his field of activities.

Visit Somali and SNNP regions to interview CEOs of financial institutions about the best practice that they employ, and also the constraints that they experience in bringing financial products to the people. Conduct validation at the MFI apex organisation and other stakeholders. Make recommendations to improve lowlands penetration for financial services in Islamic and non-Islamic regions. Provide material for detailed reporting to DFID to aid a master plan to improve economic performance of the lowlands. DFID made the findings available to GoE and the World Bank. and the latter recently (May 2019) announced $350million in grants and loan support to the pastoralists of the Lowlands.Research the level and nature of Foreign Direct Investment in Ethiopia with particular interest in the lowlands. Visit Hawassa Industrial Park, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, investors and other stakeholders to ascertain the best practice that they employ, and also the constraints that they experience with particular regard to the lowlands investments. Report the findings and recommendations to help skew future FDI to the lowlands with the aim of closing the economic performance gap between lowlands and highlands areas.

Micro Finance/MSE Expert for Agricultural Credit, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – LIFT programme. The Land Investment For Transformation (LIFT) Programme is DFID funded, and aimed to improve the incomes of the rural poor and to enhance economic growth, through three components: the development of second level land certification (SLLC); improved rural land administration; and the development of rural land systems following the ‘making markets work for the poor’ (M4P) approach. The M4P component had among its interventions one to ensure that the benefits of land certification are maximized particularly through access to credit in the agriculture market.
