Bio
John Navitsky
I’ve known a handful of engineers over the past thirty years that really stand out, and Tony is one of them. He’s an incredibly smart and knowledgeable person, but more than that, he has incredible design judgement, debugging skills, and is generally a really great person. No matter the circumstance, I’d want Tony on my team.

Tony and I worked on the Cray XR1 blade which adds FPGAs into an Cray XT system. Tony and others in the group were amazing at figuring out how to get the FPGA to talk to the XT hardware.

Worked on commodity CPU implementation of a scientific computing micro kernel, Catamount, for the SNL RedStorm project. Primarily responsible for process scheduling and IO offload. Also provided remote debug API to enabled use of Totalview at scale. Worked in Linux kernel group on projects ranging from integration of 3rd party FPGA based application accelerator, new CPU bringup, and interfaces for power management and performance statistics. Finally worked on complete re-implementation of System Management software based around Ansible configuration of diskless nodes at boot/runtime. Provided Python and C based plugin APIs for utilities, python based plugins for Module, Variable and Filter Cray specific extensions to Ansible, also provided a wrapper to designate appropriate plays and config data provided by Cray releases or user admins. I was involved in the earliest installations of the new software on the largest contemporary systems which lead to some performance analysis and troubleshooting and Squashfs adoption to improve system stability. Worked on a proof of concept and initial implementation of a heterogeneous clustered filesystem that allowed concurrent mounting of a shared filesystem between AIX, Linux and Windows nodes, based on Veritas' distributed filesystem product. Showed the POC at Veritas sponsored trade show. Worked on a hypercube based network of nodes providing head end video pump services to cable companies. I was primarily responsible for a distributed volume manager that provided reliable machine wide access to volumes stored on SCSI devices spread across the system's nodes. I also worked on device qualification for the media used using low level SCSI facilities to measure device configuration and performance. I began work at Sequent in tech support. I was responsible for debug to the appropriate FRU/software and the remedial actions arising. I was recruited to the home office and continued in a WWTS role until joining the engineering group for the cluster and distributed volume manager group. I began work at Sequent in tech support.
