Volunteering at churches and other facilities was a great stress reliever to clear my mind. I found it calming to help recycle material or to serve the homeless. This is definitely something I will continue to do again. Volunteering at churches and other facilities was a great stress reliever to clear my mind. This experience convinced me to chase medicine. I observed Dr. Kenneth Egol, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, interact with patient at outpatient, ER, and OR settings. I also shadowed other surgeons, residents, medical students, and research students to obtain a complete picture of a medical community. I observed surgeries and attended rounds on a biweekly bases, as well as attended orthopedics lectures on a weekly bases. This was a great learning experience to receive the necessary exposure and experience for my future. Working as a camp medic for over 700 students taught me to work effectively and efficiently under constant pressure. It taught me to think on my feet and to control my environment. As a camp medic, I provided specialized care for students with allergies and physical disabilities. I also supervised safety procedures and coordinated fire drills. At the end of each day, I created incident reports and inventory logs, as well as debriefed any major events with the camp director. I studied the affects of tbx5 on the formation of the epicardium during cardiovascular development with Nata Diman (M.D.). I also studied the effects of retinoic acid on the development of the epicardium. I attained experience in dissections, PCR, and histology.
