I worked alongside Tom while he was a DBA at Adecco and was impressed with the depth of his technical knowledge of SQL Server. He brought a great deal of skill and experience to a number of application delivery projects, and was a calm and assured presence in support situations, often under a lot of pressure. Hard working and professional, he would be an asset to any team and I'm very happy to recommend him.

This is a short contract to change the way SQL Server is managed and then allow a permanent DBA to look after things going forward. I setup an automatic inventory, performance and capacity management system feeding off AD and Vcenter. Maintenance code was standardized across the whole environment as well as basic monitoring of jobs. I wrote a SQL patching tool from scratch and implemented patches automatically across 100 servers (SQL 2005-2017). I implemented compression techniques to reduce disk used by more than 90% on some of the largest databases. Backup strategy was reviewed also.

Before I left Beazley I had decided to take the school summer holidays off and spend quality time with my children travelling and having adventures before the youngest started school. • First point of contact for all database projects at Beazley, I scope out all major database work (in a Database Architect role) and then hand over to the members of the DBA/SQL Development team for further design and implementation. I actively review and support these team members while the project is in flight. We have moved to an Agile Scrum methodology over the last 18-24 months.• I directly manage the DBA team (4+me) and support and mentor outsourced SQL developers where required. All support uses the ITIL framework and ServiceNow and then feeds larger pieces of work into the Agile framework.• Manage support and best practise for the SQL stack - Database design, architecture and development; High availability/disaster recovery; Always on availability groups; Database security and encryption; Environment automation and manage-by-exception across a full enterprise environment; SSIS, SSRS, SSAS and the less used SQL stack items too - MDS, Service Broker, MSX/TSX; Optimisation for Flash and SAN storage; PowerShell and dbatools; SQL 2019 on Windows/Linux/Docker/Kubernetes (lab-testing)• I have implemented automation for as much of the general DBA work as possible – including installs, performance monitoring, maintenance tasks and backups. This has freed time up for DBA’s to add as much value as possible with team numbers remaining constant but the company growing rapidly and revenue doubling in size. The team has thrived during challenging times as Beazley has begun to go through its Digital Transformation.• I wrote Beazley’s Cloud Database strategy and designed the roadmap to get 98% of Beazley’s databases into the cloud. This was a multi-year roadmap with a large amount of groundwork to minimise disruption and avoid big-bang changes. The groundwork is 90% completed and the cloud migration is due by the end of the year. It was Azure focused but with multi-cloud compatibility being a big factor.

      • I have been in charge of Database Administration for our Clustered SQL Server 2005 Data Warehouse as well as designing major new database systems processing >1Tb per month. I setup the clustered server and moved our old single server system over. I re-wrote existing stored procedures, triggers and functions to drastically improve performance on existing databases as well as major design changes to streamline processing. • I have been in charge of Database Administration for our Clustered SQL Server 2005 Data Warehouse as well as designing major new database systems processing >1Tb per month.
