I tutored Physics I & II, Statics, Dynamics, and Calculus up to 5 sessions per week for 2.5 years. Tutoring was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed working with all the different students each semester. It's exciting to see them make a new connection for the first time, when something hard finally clicks. I learned so much from them in the meantime--about teaching, communicating more effectively, accommodating for different learning styles, and maintaining a fresh supply of whiteboard markers that never last long enough.

Camcraft manufactures high precision automotive and diesel components. To meet industry demands for consistent quality and tight tolerances, they use some incredible machines in the quality engineering department. I had the opportunity to learn at least 8 of these precision systems, including coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) and vision systems during my time there. A highlight for me was completing many part approvals (PPAPs), which are needed after a manufacturing process change. A typical PPAP involved taking 3 to 6 parts and measuring every dimension and feature on the print (over 100 features on a complex part) along with 60-piece before vs. after studies on a few critical dimensions. I honestly enjoyed PPAPs, because they required creativity and they always challenged me to improve and learn new things. I had to judge the best machine to take each measurement, organize my route to efficiently grab every measurement while working around coworkers' schedules, and keep good records for the client. It was also great practice reading every feature on the prints, including the GD&T blocks. I linked a good Camcraft video below highlighting the metrology systems I got to work with.

Working at IKERD was a huge opportunity over the summer. Mr. Ikerd and the company are really passionate about improving communication in the Building Information Modeling industry in practical ways, like the LOD (Level of Development) specification and the CD-BIM curriculum. It was exciting working for a company with such clear vision, direction, and focus on continual improvement. I was hired with the title "Intern VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) Technician", but my role by the end was primarily software engineering, which I enjoyed. For my main project, I led the development of a 10,000 line C# software package over the course of a few months to help with our BIM work. That was a huge opportunity to expand my programming skills working on a project that I felt really mattered.

I spent a few summers working with dad at his light construction business. It was a great way to get my hands on a lot of tools and equipment and to see how something complex like the inside of the walls of a house all comes together. I didn't realize it until years later, but I think that work made me better able to work with my hands, visualize systems, and design things that can actually be constructed. I'm thankful for that opportunity. I spent a few summers working with dad at his light construction business.
