      • May 2017 - Aug 2019

As a paid intern in molecular oncology, I had the privilege of working closely with principle investigators Hugo Wurtele and Elliot Drobetsky on a state of the art research project at the Centre de Recherche Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (CRHMR) over the Summers of 2017 to 2019. The study had the aim of investigating the role of the novel protein SET8 in initiating molecular senescence in human cells and we examined this notion in the avenue of genomic instability and chromatin structure. By the end of my work at the CRHMR, I developed a working model for the mechanism by which SET8-mediated senescence was activated in the U2-osteosarcoma human cancer model cell line based on experiments performed over the course of 8 months. We observed that the downregulation of SET8 generated an aberrant accumulation of MMS22L-TONSL protein complexes at nascent chromatin causing a tremendous build up of DNA replication stress leading to DNA damage that initiated activation of the senescence pathway through its primary inducers p53 and p21. In addition, I also completed an undergraduate honours thesis based on my research findings at the CRHMR in affiliation with Concordia University and the Université de Montréal.
