Tom is a very rare beast. A first-class graduate in maths and philosophy, he is a gentle giant in both physical and intellectual stature. He is an incisive logician whilst being socially grounded in the world of real human beings. He excels at analysing problems and perceiving their solutions, yet possesses the ability to communicate those issues and their fixes to laypeople in a manner that in genuinely enlightening and empowering. Tom is efficient in his work. He works diligently and his output is high. He is good-humoured in his demeanour but serious about producing quality work on a consistent basis. He is perfect for a systems role: capable of distilling an organisation down to its constituent parts and assessing accurately (and, crucially, actionably) where its structures and processes are hampering its stated goals..and that is when he really gets to work. Tom is a brilliant mind, a dream employee, and a damned fine gentleman to boot. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Tom is an extremely effective and gifted Head of Systems. He has a fiercely sharp intelligence, allowing him to grasp a range of different intellectual, operational or managerial systemic problems rapidly. He possesses a depth of empathy to understand issues from the perspective of different stakeholders and use this to inform his solutions. His clarity of thought enables these solutions to systemic problems to be always elegant, always lucid and above all always very commercially practical. He is able to seamlessly integrate his wide knowledge of programmes such as Excel or VBA into his problem solving. Tom has a warm and engaging personability helping him easily gain the confidence of co-workers and clients alike, and helps with his ability to communicate and implement his solutions clearly. He gives clear timescales for his work and conscientiously always delivers on them. I have worked closely with Tom over the past few years on a number of different issues and recommend him unreservedly.

    • Head of Systems
      • Aug 2013 - Jun 2017

I had responsibility for the Systems team, who designed, created and implemented operational systems across a large diversified media group in London and its subsidiary hotel and leisure groups in Bristol and Hay-on-Wye. I addition, I was responsible for managing performance across these businesses, using the outputs of my systems as a mechanism for change.I worked directly with the CEO, Finance Director and the managing directors of the individual businesses, and I led the Systems team, the HR department and managed Open Gallery, a video art gallery. I was required to understand the daily workings of each business in detail, and then make judgements on how best to tackle a managerial or operational problem. I understood, mapped and streamlined process, before creating systemic solutions that ensured processes happened as it should have. I had direct managerial responsibility for ten staff members across the group. An equally important part of my role was communicating and training colleagues on the changes in process and systemic infrastructure, ensuring a smooth transition from old to new. Working with the large amounts of data across Excel, Access, Project, Google Analytics, and issue trackers, and then manipulating that data utilising complex Excel formulae, Pivot Tables, VBA, Python and SQL, I worked with large data sets, and handled it adeptly to problem-solve, clarify, and then affect real change. My job necessitated working across many media agency sectors, the arts, pharmaceutical, information tech and leisure industries, from post-production, digital marketing, and medical communications to restaurants, bars and hotels, and allowed me to work with a huge range of people doing a variety of interesting things.
