I began volunteering at Citizens Advice in May 2021. After completing the initial training programme independently and remotely, I had a number of weeks in the office shadowing existing advisers and learning how to interact with clients. This often meant observing how to take to upset or disgruntled clients or even clients of which English was not their first language. Following this period, I was allowed to work from home. This meant managing my own caseload from week-to-week on topics including, but not limited to, consumer, divorce, energy, and benefits. The skills and experiences I have developed from my time here are incalculable. I have had the opportunity to speak to vulnerable clients about sensitive topics necessitating empathy to be shown, but also ensuring my advice points are delivered well and accurately. I have written countless letters on behalf of clients who did not feel confident enough to contact a business that owed money. From August 2022 onwards, my work was in the office and face-to-face with clients. Show less

My role at Marks & Spencer was of a Food Retail Assistant. This involved stacking shelves, working on the tills, ensuring food was not out of date and replacing food that was, and face-to-face problem solving with customers. It was vital that the large team of staff all communicated to each other to efficiently resolve customer’s problems and maintain a very good level of service. As part of a flexible team of five other bar staff, I helped glass collect and serve drinks to customers. Depending on what the situation demanded, everyone in the team took on different responsibilities and roles. Together we worked to deliver a high level of service for upwards of 200 customers, ensuring that every reasonable demand was met and that they had a good time. This often meant being flexible to new situations and dexterous as to perform a role we were not sure of. The importance of teamwork and efficient communication can not be overstated, and my 13 months in this role gave me an invaluable lesson on how professional teams should work. Show less
