As a fairly large property sales and management agency with 200+ staff across 14 offices around Scotland, Galbraith recognised the need to streamline some of their routine workflows and business processes, but for historical reasons were not well suited to off-the-shelf tools available for those purposes. As such, they developed a number of in-house applications covering GIS workflows, health & safety assessments, supplier & client management tools, and bespoke accounting integrations. During my tenure I was responsible for managing, upgrading and enhancing those services, as well as a variety of duties including troubleshooting server and network infrastructure, mentoring junior developers, and modernising internal infrastructure to reduce security attack surface, improving performance, and codifying and relaying those details to less experienced staff. During the final years of my undergraduate degree, some friends took inspiration from an Informatics Entrepreneurship course and decided it had enough potential to spin out a business -- Mobile Healthcare Networks. Off the back of some prototypes developed in our spare time, we applied and won a competitive Scottish Enterprise SMART award, allowing us to grow the business and further improve our products. Unfortunately as a complex and novel product in a highly regulated market, we never fully achieved financial success, despite significant interest from both patients and support staff. Following that, MHN pivoted into a more consultancy model, specialising in early stage technology demonstrators and proof of concept systems on behalf of other entrepreneurial clients. Show less
