Experience

    • Chemistry Teacher
      • Aug 2017 - Present

I have taught at SPGS for the last three years, teaching all age groups from Year 7 to Year 13. I have a strong interest in course structure, having focussed my Masters thesis on threshold concepts in undergraduate chemistry, and take an active role during course planning for IGCSE and A Level to ensure we structure concepts in the most pedagogically effective order. In addition, I rewrote the school’s Year 8 course and parts of its Year 7 course to align with current educational research regarding threshold concepts and misconceptions at this level - focussing on a substance-based approach. In my first year, I started ‘Chemistry Geek Club’ which is a weekly lunchtime club for senior students who are interested in learning some more advanced ideas in chemistry that are beyond the scope of the A Level course. We typically cover introductory undergraduate concepts such as conformational chemistry, quantum mechanics, molecular orbitals theory and acid-base chemistry (rationalising Ka values). It is probably the highlight of my week! Outside of academia, I organise the school’s annual ski trip, alongside helping to run the school SCUBA diving club on the organisational side, whilst also learning myself! Show less

I spent my fourth year at university undertaking a Masters project in chemical education, working in a team of eight in total. My research focussed on identifying ‘integrative thresholds’ in undergraduate chemistry. Thresholds, proposed by Meyer and Land in 2003, are key skills or concepts that must be mastered to progress within a subject. Some thresholds are said to be integrative, in that mastering the threshold brings together ideas that may have previously seemed unconnected to the learner. Such ideas are important in chemistry, as many concepts or skills underlie all of the different branches of the subject. Three integrative thresholds were identified through surveys and discussion with educators from Oxford and many other universities from across the U.K., alongside conducting a misconception analysis by interviewing first year students with carefully constructed, open-ended questions. These were molecular orbital theory, stability and 3D thinking, and the chemistry department at Oxford used the information in my thesis when updating the course in 2018. Show less

    • PR Assistant
      • Jun 2013 - Oct 2013

Included direct contact with journalists and bloggers, writing press releases and analysis of PR metrics. Requested back for ad hoc work. Included direct contact with journalists and bloggers, writing press releases and analysis of PR metrics. Requested back for ad hoc work.

    • Bartender
      • Jul 2012 - Mar 2013

I worked as a bartender and waiter full-time during my gap year at a successful pub in Swallowfield. The time spent here developed my interpersonal skills and confidence in public speaking. After only a short time working at the G&D I was training new members of staff and managed the bar on a day to day basis.
