Presented with a unique opportunity, I undertook the challenge of overseeing a small-scale alluvial gold and diamond mining social enterprise. It was an extremely rewarding project that developed my managerial and planning skills.• Employed first principles geological exploration/production methods to provide an appraisal of a four-acre alluvial gold site. Simultaneously setup a diamond operation at a separate site. • Constructed a full protocol document, plan, and desk study including regional basemaps. • Directed a comprehensive trail pitting and bulk sampling program.• Formulated production methods (sluice/dredge systems) and trained the local populace into operations and efficient mining methods.• Managed the day to day logistics for, machinery/equipment, transport, staff, and product, at two small scale mining sites in a demanding environment.

• Work consisted of assisting with the logging of drill core in preparation for core sampling. Practical deduction and scientific methods were applied to ensure accurate results. On top of logging a large dataset was collected to be used in a final year thesis entitled: ‘The effectiveness of pyrite as a proxy for gold mineralization and the application of fractal statistics: a case study from Curraghinalt gold deposit, Northern Ireland’ – An advanced statistical and petrological study into a vein host gold deposit providing recommendations for future exploration (available on request).

• ~9 weeks was spent in the field living and working in a remote exploration camp. The work consisted of rock grab sampling, carrying out full initial mapping of the region, and assisting with diamond drilling operations. A hostile and demanding environment required working as part of a close knit team. I was able to demonstrate my versatility and independent thinking when called upon for different tasks while adhering to safe working guidelines in the field and around the helicopter, chartered aircraft, and various ATVs. • I helped compile a daily report surmising each fieldwork excursion employing the use of word processing and ARC GIS. Later study carried out at Cardiff University concluded in a report dissertation that deduced depositional environments, stratigraphic relationships, and how they related to the economic resource.
