  🍏 Volunteer & Founding Member | Cardiff Food Co-op 🍏 Upon my move to Cardiff, I volunteered at a local food co-op which was starting up. This initiative aims to support economically vulnerable families by diverting potential food waste into their households, providing both financial relief and food security. 🔨 Challenge 1: Rapid Operational Growth: In just one year, our service grew from supporting fewer than 10 families to over 40, presenting logistical challenges around food storage, display layout, and ensuring quality and variety for all, especially those served last. 🔧 Solution: To overcome these challenges, we innovated in our storage and display systems to accommodate the increased food volume. We also implemented an equitable distribution system, ensuring a consistent variety of quality options for all families, regardless of pick-up time. 🔨 Challenge 2: Meeting Growing Demand for Food Supply With our service rapidly expanding, we faced the challenge of securing enough food to meet the increased demand. 🔧 Solution: Community Collaboration & Local Shop Partnerships I reached out to local shops, forming partnerships to secure additional food supplies. Through collaboration, we sourced diverse fresh produce and essentials, ensuring a steady supply for the families we served. 🌱 Growth & Impact: This strategic approach enabled us to quadruple the number of families we support within a year. We cater to a socially and ethnically diverse group of people, with the positive feedback from these families reinforcing our commitment to this essential service. This upgrade significantly increased our capacity to serve more needy families. Additionally, to safely transport food from the basement, I participated in the installation of a practical food lift, easing the physical burden and increasing operational efficiency. 📦 Challenge 2: Streamlining Food Distribution: To further improve our reach, I embarked on an innovative project to repurpose shipping containers into strategic food storage units, greatly enhancing our food distribution process. 🏙️ Transition to Administrative Role: Upon relocating to Cardiff, I transitioned to an administrative role. Here, I lent my skills to write impactful grant letters, vital for our fundraising, and contributed to the creation of a Food Bank newsletter, strengthening our community connection. 🎚️ Impact & Growth: In addition to managing food storage, creating food parcels, and conducting annual weigh-ins, our collective efforts resulted in remarkable growth. Last year, we distributed an impressive 35 tonnes of food, supporting over 5000 families. This enriching experience underscored resilience, innovation, and problem-solving.
